Freshwater Aquarium Keeping
Everyone knows what an aquarium is, and has seen one, either in a pet shop or a friends house. They look spectacular and show, and everyone feels the same about them, they brighten up a dull corner, or act as entertainment.
‘Aquarium’ comes from the two Latin words ‘Aqua’ (water) and Rium (building), therefore a fish tank is infact a water building (all very logical)
There are now hundreds, if not thousands of different aquariums available on the market for you to purchase, from the small plastic bowls for a single gold fish, to the extensive 100+ litre tanks that can hold shoals of fish, the choice is yours!
The History of the Aquarium
The modern aquarium was developed in the 1850's, but modern things have a way of echoing historical pieces. Even the Sumerians had a way of keeping their fish - they had ponds to keep wild fish in until they were made into dinner.
Goldfish and Koi fish were being bred as far back as 2,000 years ago in China, and during the Song dynasty goldfish were kept in ceramic bowls. This explains why the Koi carp is seen as such a precious and ornamental piece in China.
Even in ancient Egyptian art, there are remnants of traditional aquariums - fish were kept in rectangular temple pools, something unique and interesting and what most people don't think of when they imagine an aquarium in history. It is also very impressive considering that there are no triangular/pyramid tanks on the market in the modern day.
Keeping fish as a hobby really picked up after the First World War (Middle to late 1800's). With the introduction of electricity into people’s homes, and materials becoming cheaper, fish keeping became a very popular and therapeutic hobby.
Fish keeping has now been transformed into a huge industry with millions of websites and companies competing to provide the best information and products for the general public to use.
This explains why there is such a huge mixture of products that we can choose from to adapt our tanks and make them interesting, but also unique to anyone else’s tank!
Big Ol' Aquarium
Maybe not an aquarium you will be having in your front room any time soon (unless you love in an aquarium) is a tank in the Osaka aquarium, which holds 5,400 cubic meters of volume, and it actually contains over 580 species! Impressive eh?!
Introduction To Tropical Fish – Want To Have A Beautiful Tropical Fish Aquarium In Your Living Room Faster Than You Ever Thought Possible?
Question by Stephen: The best way to add tetra plant substrate to a already set up fish tank?
tank been set up for about a year now. My plan is to take fish out with keeping 60% of the water. Take all the other bits out(give gravel quick rince?) Then add 40/40% old/new water back in. Leave it to settle about hour or two, with filter going. Then put fish back with the other 20% of water. then next week do another small water change an add plants.

Sounds like a reasonable plan to me
If you're going to mix up the old gravel with the new substrate, you could probably just dump in the new and mix it up too without taking it out. But, giving it a rinse would appeal to me too to get some built up debris out of it
If this substrate is anything like flourite, you'll have to rinse it very well first as that stuff has a lot of mud in/on it that will turn your water brown. Test out some of the new stuff in a bowl with water and see if mud comes off of it. I had to rinse my flourite a ton
